Your Dashboard¶
The Dashboard is the page you land on when you first sign in to Kipper. It's built around a Setup checklist that walks admins through the steps needed to get your workspace running. After setup, it stays as an at-a-glance summary of what's connected — you can revisit it any time by clicking Dashboard in the left sidebar.
The setup checklist¶
The Setup section shows a numbered wizard at the top of the page and a matching list of expandable rows below. The current step is highlighted; completed steps get a green checkmark; upcoming steps stay grey. The order depends on which finance system you connect:
- QuickBooks Online or Xero: three steps — Connect Finance → Connect an Interface → Test AI Access.
- NetSuite: four steps — Connect Finance → Configure Subsidiary → Connect an Interface → Test AI Access. The Configure Subsidiary step only appears for NetSuite.
Step 1 — Connect Finance¶
Link the finance system you want Kipper to read from — QuickBooks Online, Xero, or NetSuite.
- Click Connect on the Connect Finance step
- In the Connect to Finance System modal, pick your platform from the Finance system dropdown
- Click Connect to launch your finance system's OAuth flow, or Connect to Sandbox to try Kipper against a test environment first (available for QuickBooks Online)
- Sign in to your finance system and grant Kipper access — you'll be redirected back to Kipper
You'll see a green "Data source connected successfully." banner and the step is marked complete. From then on, the Connect Finance row shows a Connected badge with Reconnect and Disconnect links. Expand the row to see the connection details — the company name, connection ID, mode (Production or Sandbox), and which integration it uses.
For platform-specific instructions, see QuickBooks Online, Xero, or NetSuite.
Step 2 (NetSuite only) — Configure Subsidiary¶
If you connected NetSuite, an additional Configure Subsidiary step appears before you can move on. This is where you pick which NetSuite subsidiary Kipper should sync — the full initial sync is deferred until you save this selection.
- Click Configure on the Configure Subsidiary step
- In the modal, select the subsidiary Kipper should read from
- Click Save — Kipper starts syncing data for that subsidiary in the background
Once saved, the step shows a Configured badge with a Change link so you can switch subsidiaries later.
Connect an Interface¶
Add at least one interface so your team can ask Kipper questions from where they already work. This is Step 2 on QuickBooks Online / Xero and Step 3 on NetSuite.
- Click Connect on the Connect an Interface step
- In the Connect an Interface modal, pick a platform from the Choose a platform… dropdown (Slack or Microsoft Teams)
- Click Connect to launch the OAuth flow (Slack) or the two-party admin consent flow (Microsoft Teams)
- Once complete, you'll see an "Interface connected successfully." banner
The Connect an Interface row then shows a 1 connected badge (or higher if you add more), plus + Add Interface and Disconnect actions. Expand the row to see:
- The connected workspace name, platform, and connection ID
- How the interface is managed (SMS is shown as Kipper support managed because it's provisioned by Kipper support rather than through this modal)
- A platform-specific setup checklist — the same email-matching rules, restart tips, and usage notes for that platform, shown inline so your team can act on them without leaving the dashboard
For deeper platform-specific setup, see Slack, Microsoft Teams, or SMS.
Test AI Access¶
Once your finance system is connected and at least one interface is added, Kipper starts syncing your data in the background. This step lets you confirm Kipper can query your data — you don't need to wait for the sync to finish before trying it. This is the final step: Step 3 on QuickBooks Online / Xero and Step 4 on NetSuite.
Under the AI Assistant card on this step you'll see:
- Progress messages noting which entity types have loaded so far (metadata → customers → vendors → invoices, and so on)
- Example questions that update as more entities become available
- A Test scope dropdown — defaults to your own permission level; admins can pick a lower tier here to preview what a Standard user will see
- An Ask anything… input to type your own question
- Skip and Verify buttons at the bottom
Click Verify to mark the step complete once you're happy with an answer, or Skip to move on (the step is marked Skipped but does not block setup).
For what to ask, how Kipper turns your question into an answer, and the accuracy caveats, see Asking your first question.
After setup¶
Once all steps are complete, the Dashboard stays as your setup summary. From here you can:
- Reconnect or Disconnect your finance system
- Add Interface to plug in additional chat surfaces
- Expand any step to see the underlying connection details and interface setup instructions
If your workspace ever enters a restricted state (trial expired, suspended, or complimentary access expired), a red banner appears at the top of the Dashboard. See Why am I seeing a red banner about my workspace? for what each banner means and what remains accessible while it's showing.
For Standard users¶
Standard members don't need to run through the setup checklist — an admin has already done it. Your day-to-day flow is asking questions from the AI Assistant tab in Kipper, or from Slack, Microsoft Teams, or SMS if your workspace has those connected. If something looks unfinished on the Dashboard, ask your workspace admin.
