Slack

Installing the Kipper Slack app

  1. In the Kipper portal, go to Interfaces in the sidebar
  2. Click Add interface and choose Slack
  3. Authorise the Kipper app in your Slack workspace — Slack admin permissions may be required to install apps
  4. Kipper appears as a bot in your workspace

After installation, quit and restart Slack before looking for Kipper. This is a Slack client behaviour, not a Kipper setting.

Each Kipper member's email must match the email on their Slack account. If the two don't match, Slack won't recognise the user as an authorised Kipper user and messages will be ignored.

Where to find Kipper in Slack

Once you restart Slack, Kipper appears in three places:

  • Top-right agents panel — Kipper is listed alongside your other Slack agents
  • Bottom-left under Apps — the installed apps list; click Kipper to open a direct message
  • Any public or private channel where Kipper has been added — mention @Kipper to ask a question

Asking questions

Once installed, anyone granted access can ask Kipper:

  • From the agents panel or Apps list: open Kipper and type your question — no @ mention needed
  • In a channel: mention @Kipper followed by your question (Kipper must be added to the channel first)
  • In a DM: message Kipper directly — no @ mention needed

Kipper replies in the same thread, usually within a few seconds. Complex queries may take longer.

Troubleshooting

If Kipper doesn't respond:

  • Confirm the app is still installed (Slack admin → Manage apps)
  • Quit and reopen the Slack app if Kipper is not visible under Apps in the sidebar
  • Check you're using @Kipper correctly in channel messages (not required in DMs)
  • Verify your user has been granted access in the Kipper portal
  • Windows only: If the Kipper bot does not appear in the upper-right of Slack on Windows, update your Slack desktop app to the latest version. Older Windows builds can prevent new bots from appearing in the sidebar until the app is updated.
