Microsoft Teams

Connecting Microsoft Teams to Kipper takes two things: a Microsoft 365 administrator grants Kipper permission for your tenant, and Kipper installs the Teams bot for your workspace.

Bot install is currently handled by Kipper support while our Teams app is pending marketplace listing — self-service install is coming soon. After you complete the consent flow below, contact support@kipper.com and we'll side-load the bot for your Teams tenant.

Step 1 — Grant Kipper permissions in Microsoft 365

  1. In the Kipper portal, go to Interfaces in the sidebar
  2. Click Add interface and choose Microsoft Teams
  3. Kipper asks: Are you a Microsoft 365 administrator who can consent permissions for Kipper?

If you are a Microsoft 365 administrator

  1. Choose Yes, I can approve
  2. You'll be redirected to Microsoft to approve Kipper's Teams permissions for your organisation
  3. Sign in with your Microsoft 365 admin account and grant the requested permissions

Kipper is redirected back to the portal once Microsoft confirms admin consent. If Microsoft is still propagating consent, Kipper will keep retrying in the background — leave the page open.

If you are not a Microsoft 365 administrator

  1. Choose No, send a link to my Microsoft 365 administrator
  2. Optionally enter your Microsoft administrator's email — Kipper can send the consent link to them by email, or you can copy the link and share it yourself
  3. Click Generate link

The consent link is single-use and valid for 7 days. Only one link can be active per workspace — generating a new one replaces any pending link.

Your Microsoft 365 administrator opens the link and lands on a Kipper-hosted page titled "Approve Microsoft Teams for [your workspace] Kipper interface". From there they click Continue to Microsoft, sign in with a Teams admin account, and grant the requested permissions.

If the link has expired, been used, or been revoked, the administrator will be told to request a new one from you.

A given Microsoft 365 tenant can only be connected to one Kipper workspace at a time. If the admin consent step reports that your tenant is already bound to another workspace, disconnect it there first, then retry.

Step 2 — Ask Kipper support to install the bot

After Microsoft confirms consent, email support@kipper.com and let us know Teams consent is complete. We'll side-load the Kipper bot for your Teams tenant. Self-service marketplace install is coming soon.

After connection

Once the interface is connected in Kipper:

  • A Microsoft 365 administrator must have approved Kipper permissions for your tenant
  • Use the same email address in Teams as the one on your Kipper profile so Kipper can identify you
  • If your Microsoft tenant changes, re-run consent from the interface detail page
  • Open a chat with the Kipper bot from the Teams Apps tray to ask questions

Asking questions

  • In a channel: mention @Kipper followed by your question
  • In a direct chat: open the Kipper bot from the Teams Apps tray and message it

Kipper replies in the same thread, usually within a few seconds. Complex queries may take longer.

What a Kipper reply looks like

  • Source citations. Where an answer relies on your finance data, Kipper adds numbered [1] [2] markers in the text and shows matching buttons underneath the reply. Tap a button to open the source record in your finance system.
  • AI-generated marker. Teams labels every Kipper reply as AI-generated, per Microsoft's guidance for bot content.
  • Feedback buttons. Every real answer includes Teams' built-in thumbs-up / thumbs-down feedback. Tap either to help us tune Kipper for your data.
  • Suggested follow-ups. Under most replies Kipper adds tappable follow-up suggestions — click one to send it as your next question.

One-click PDF invoice (QuickBooks Online only)

When you ask a question that resolves to exactly one QuickBooks Online invoice, Kipper offers to fetch its PDF. Tap the suggested Yes, get the PDF of Invoice #… button and Kipper returns a download link in the same chat.

This currently works only for QuickBooks Online invoices. Support for Xero and vendor bills is planned.

Asking for help

Send help (case-insensitive) as a message and Kipper replies with a short explanation of what it does, a few example questions, and a link to this help centre.

If your workspace hasn't finished setting up its Teams interface yet — or the bot is installed for a tenant Kipper doesn't recognise — the same help message is what Kipper sends, so anyone messaging the bot always gets a useful response instead of silence.

If Kipper adds new Microsoft permissions, if consent was only partially granted, or if Teams users are being told to contact an administrator for access, refresh consent from Interfaces → [your Teams interface] → Refresh Microsoft permissions. You can either approve directly (if you're a Microsoft 365 admin) or generate a new admin handoff link.

Troubleshooting

If Kipper doesn't respond in Teams:

  • Confirm the Microsoft 365 admin consent step was completed successfully
  • Confirm Kipper support has installed the bot for your tenant
  • Ensure the email you use in Teams matches the one on your Kipper profile
  • Ensure you're using @Kipper correctly in channel messages
  • Verify your user has been granted access in the Kipper portal

If the consent link expired before it could be used, generate a new one from Interfaces in the Kipper sidebar.

Contact support@kipper.com if the issue persists — we reply within one business day.
